Mahina Kau Ahiahi - Words & Music by Alice Namakelua

`Auhea wale `oe e ka mahina
Kau mai la i luna me kou nani

O ka ne`e mâlie a`e a ke ao
Kau pono i ka piko o ke kuahiwi

Ka hôkû kau ahiahi kou hoa ia
I ko`olua no ke ala o hôkû loa

Ha`ina kou nani e ka mahina
Kau mai la i luna me kou nani

Where are you, O moon
Rising up with your beauty

The slow moving cloud
Rests right on the mountain peak

The evening star is your companion
A partner on the path of the morning star

I tell of your beauty, O moon
Rising up with your beaut

Source: Auntie Alice Ku`uleialohapoina`ole Namakelua LP - As the composer was driving along the Ala Wai canal on her way to the August Hula Festival, she noticed the full moon over Diamond Head and heard voices singing about the moon. She parked her car, wrote down the words and continued on to the performance. The melody stayed with her in spite of the other music being played at the festival. Finally, at 3:00 A.M. she completed this song on August 15, 1957.
