Maui O Kama - Traditional

E Maui o Kama ku`u one hanau
Kilakila i ke ku mai o Haleakala
Hanohano `oe no Honoapi`ilani
Kaulana i ke Paniwai o `Iao

E ka manu o ke ao e ha`i mai `oe
Auhea ku`u pua roselani
A ke `ala holo a`e hi`ipoi nei
I ke aheahe `olu a ka makani
Oh, Maui of Kama, my homeland
Proudly stands Haleakala
Famous are you, bays of Pi`ilani
Renowned is the water dam of `Iao

The birds of day flirt with you
Where is my rose?
The scent spreads from my cherished one
In the gentle pleasant wind

Source: Kama, short for Kamalalawalu, was a Maui chief who failed in an attempt to capture the island of Hawai`i. The six bays ruled by Chief Pi`ilani were Honokahua (location or site bay), Honokeana (cave bay), Honokohau (bay drawing dew), Honokowai, (bay drawing water), Honolua (two harbors) and Honoana. Kepaniwai is along the Wailuku river where the army of Kalani`opu`u was nearly annihilated. The bodies of the warriors formed a dam stopping the flow of water.
