1970's

  • Mark R. Patterson (NY75, Staph 77-78) Mark's wife Lori gave birth to their second daughter Linnea Rose in August, 1996, their oldest daughter - Sarina Mary will turn 6 in May. . Mark has a PhD in Biology from Harvard (as does Lori), and they are both Associate Professors of Marine Science at the College of William & Mary. They are assigned to the School of Marine Science at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point, VA. Mark teaches physical biology of marine organisms and biological oceanography. His research deals with corals, sponges, and other sessile invertebrates, and he has done work on Lake Baikal, in Siberia, the Caribbean, Chesapeake Bay, and the Gulf of Maine.

  • Carrie Rinker-Schaeffer (OH82) and Edwin F. 'Win' Schaffer, III (KY76) are the proud parents of their first child - Edwin F. Schaeffer, IV (nicknamed Carl after Carrie's father). Carl was born February 19, 1997 in Chicago where they reside, and where Carrie is director of urological research and assistant professor of surgery at the University of Chicago. Carrie did her PhD work in Biochemistry at the U of KY. (Win and Carrie first met at the NYSC's 20th Anniversary Reunion over July 4, 1983 in Elkins, WV.)

  • Tom Edwards (NE77) and wife Barbara welcomed their second offspring, Liam Thomas on August 8, 1997; they also have a daughter - Emily Lynell (5). Since his last update, Tom accepted the postition of Associate Academic Dean at Castleton State College in Vermont, where he is director of first year programs and faculty development.

  • Firth J. Griffith (OH77) and his wife Yuqing Li Son had their first child, Mostyn Lloyd, May 5, 1996. Firth and family live in Palo Alto, CA, where Firth works for a venture capital firm - Matsui & Company.

  • Maren L. Nelson (MT77) and her husband - Matthew R. Robertson were blessed with their first child - Bryden Matthew Robertson on December 11, 1996. Maren and family reside in Kirkland, WA where Matthew works for Boeing and she is a project engineer with Physio-Control doing real-time software and product specifications for new product development.

  • Daughter number 4 arrived for Peet Simard (Staph 79) in the fall of 1997.

1980's

  • Robert D. Hoover, Jr. (AL81) is medical director of the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute in Nashville, where he directs patient care for a 290 bed psychiatric facility, performing all internal medical care. Bob also runs all the labs, supervises infection control, and the employee health clinic. He obtained his medical degree from the U of South Alabama and is married to Elizabeth (also an MD). They have two children - Robert D. Hoover, III (6 in February), and a new infant born in September of this year.

  • Todd J. Strand (ND81) and his wife Debbie had their second child - Kyle Robert, August 2, 1996. They have one daughter - Alexa Marie (5). Todd is a software developer with IBM in Rochester, MN, owns beef cattle in ND, and serves in the Army Reserves as a Captain and patient administration officer with the 114th Combat Support Hospital. Todd is also currently pursuing an MBA.

  • Laura Buchtel Norris (OR82) and Kenneth became proud parents of a son, Davidson Robert Norris on November 4, 1997. Laura is pursuing her BSN/MSN at the University of Pennsylvania.

  • Sherri Helinski Hastings (WI82, Staph 88) resides in Oak Harbor, WA with her husband Brian and their first child - born June, 1996.

  • Kathy Rutherford Satterfield (Staph 85) and Jay had a daughter, Rachel Renee Satterfield on October 14, 1997. Kathy is a nurse in Morristown, TN.

  • Ben Ferguson (UT86, Staph 92) and Annie Kuntz Ferguson (Staph 92) had their second child - Emma Larie on June 21, 1996; their first born-Joshua Daniel - will be 4 in April. Ben completed his MA in Physics at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN this past year. (It was also a surprise for Ben and Annie to discover the pediatrician they were taking their children to was none other than Dr. Paul Heil (IA80, Staph 81,82) who practices in Nashville.)

  • Edwin Chen (OK87) and Ying Shi Chen welcomed their first child Stephanie into the world December 7, 1996. The Chen's live in Hanover Park, IL; and Edwin is a senior engineer with a startup company - Cruise Technologies. CruiseTech is introducing a new type of wireless 'thin-client' portable device. He is a member of the team involved in producing the next-generation version of the device.

1990's

  • Jennifer Charlton Bundy (TX91) and her husband Kenneth (August, 1993) were expecting their first child in November, 1997. Jennifer completed a degree in Biology at Texas Tech, and has been teaching Chemistry and Physics at Littlefield High School since 1996.

  • Ben Ferguson (UT86, Staph 92) and Annie Kuntz Ferguson (Staph 92) had their second child - Emma Larie on June 21, 1996; their first born-Joshua Daniel - will be 4 in April. Ben completed his MA in Physics at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN this past year.
