When Kuahi asked us to think of a name for our Boston Hawaiian Club (BHC), I knew that there must be at least two names--one official and one spiritual. This is why we have "Wahi Ku Moku" alongside BHC. It means "anchorage" and it is what we envisioned for this group of people. A place to anchor, a harbor, a place to rest, recover and gather strength. The kaona is also clear. We are all far from home. Some by choice and some through the winds of chage. It was this image of having an anchor, a place to pause and collect myself that I was looking for in this group. It is also another name for Hawai'i. I found it because Hawai'i is more than our ke one hanau, our birthplace; it is the balance of my day, the shores of my dreams and the center of my creativity. It is my wahi ku moku.
As so wahi ku moku is a place, it is a person, it is the notion that we are all stronger by being part of a larger whole. We are buoys for each other and anchors to tether when the pace, space and energy of this place challenges us. I helped begin this because I was losing myself and found me agin in the embrace of na mea Hawai'i, in the things and priorities that matter. Welcome. Stop a while. E komo mai.
