Uncle Mateo Sabog
Uncle Mateo, formerly declared Missing in Action from the Vietnam War, is ALIVE!!! The Sabog Family first heard of this fabulous news on February 22, 1996!!! Army MSG Mateo Sabog disappeared on February 25, 1970 while he was assigned to the 507th Transportation Group at Qui Nhon, Nghia Binh Province. His name was just recently engraved on "The Wall" for the 1993 Memorial Day Ceremonies. In March 1996, I had flown in from New York City to visit with Uncle Mateo at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center located at Fort Gordon near Augusta, Georgia. As we were returning to his room from Sunday Mass, someone asked if we spoke any other languages. So I began to recite the Sign of the Cross in Hawaiian and I when I glanced at Uncle Mateo, I was extremely fortunate to see him give me a very rare and huge smile right before my very eyes. It was such a beautiful sight!!! Welcome Back Home to Hawaii!!! |
